ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Objective: It is proposed that in some conditions such as pregnancy and osteoporosis where the bone turnover rate is high, there is mobilization of various minerals including lead (Pb) from bone to blood. This study aimed to determine if there were any differences in serum Pb levels among elderly osteopaenic patients, elderly osteoporotic persons and healthy controls. Methods: Fifty-four elderly persons (26 men and 28 women) from the Amirkola Health and Ageing Project, Iran, were included in this study. The diagnosis of osteopaenia and osteoporosis was based on spine and femur bone mineral density (BMD) measurements. After blood sampling, serum Pb levels were analysed by the method of atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Results: According to the BMD measurements, 19 persons had normal BMD, while 16 had osteopaenia and 19 suffered from osteoporosis. The differences in body mass index in these three groups were statistically significant (p < 0.001). The patients with osteoporosis had the highest levels of alkaline phosphatase and the highest rate of bone turnover. The mean ± standard deviation of the serum Pb levels in these groups were 236.8 ± 98.0, 270.0 ± 81.5 and 258.3 ± 57.5 μg/L, respectively, and the differences were not statistically significant (p = 0.467). Conclusion: No statistically significant differences in serum Pb levels were observed in healthy controls compared with osteopaenic persons and osteoporotic persons. This suggests that mobilization of Pb from bone to blood in this population of elderly osteopaenic patients and elderly osteoporotic patients was similar to that in the healthy controls.

ABSTRACT

In addition to high cost of treatment, anterior cruciate ligament tear leads to lesser participation in sports, secondary injury and mental problems. Therefore, prevention of ACL injury in athletes is a top priority in many studies. The aim of this study was to conduct a review over screening tests for neuromuscular imbalance causing non-contact ACL injuries. Scientific citations search engines such as PubMed, Medline, and Science Direct were looked for relevant articles using the following keywords: "Screening Test", "Neuromuscular Imbalance" and "Non-Contact ACL Injury" during the previous two decades. Hop tests have high reliability and there is a statistically significant correlation between lower extremity symmetry index of this test and isokinetic knee extensor strength. Static and dynamic balance tests have high reliability and validity and their results have correlation with ACL injury. Both double-leg squat test and single leg squat test are used to assess poor neuromuscular control of the trunk, dynamic flexibility, strength of hip, and balance. Modified Landing Error Scoring System Tests are used to identify movement patterns that increase the risk of non-contact ACL injury. In order to identify the most common neuromuscular imbalance related to ACL injuries, we used tuck jump test. Video drop-jump screening test was used to assess valgus alignment in knee. Familiarity with reliable and valid screening tests related to non- contact ACL injuries will be of benefit to researchers specialized in ACL for prevention of injuries. They will be able to select appropriate tests to identify neuromuscular imbalance in people at risk of ACL injury. Therefore, researchers can provide more specific corrective exercise programs

ABSTRACT

Disseminated candidiasis is a serious problem in public health that results from the invasion of Candida species, in particular Candida albicans. The aim of this study was to compare the efficacies of Zataria multiflora essential oil and itraconazole in clearing C. albicans from the visceral organs of BALB/c mice suffered from disseminated candidiasis. Zataria multiflora essential oil was extracted using Clevenger-type apparatus and analyzed by gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS). For clearance experiment, mice (20-25 g, N=8 per group) received essential oil at doses of 30, 48 and 64 mg/kg and itraconazole at dose of 200 mg/kg intraperitoneally (IP) 2 days before and after intravenous inoculation of 0.5×10(6) C. albicans blastospores. The treated animals were sacrificed on day 20, and 0.1 g of the tissue homogenates was plated onto specific media. In GC-Mass, the main components of the essential oil were carvacrol (61.29 percent) and thymol (25.18 percent). The results demonstrated that IP administration of 64 mg/kg of the essential oil had the highest efficacy in reducing C. albicans and produced 39.5, 21.8, 141.5, 174 and 501-fold reductions in mean CFUs per 0.1 gram in Candida infections of the liver, spleen, lungs, brain and kidneys, respectively, compared to positive control. Itraconazole showed significantly more responsiveness than the essential oil at dose of 30 mg/kg in clearing C. albicans from the kidneys (P<0.02), brain (P<0.02) and spleen (P<0.04), and less responsiveness than that of 64 mg/kg in clearing the organism from the brain (P<0.01), lungs (P<0.0005) and kidneys (P<0.0005), whereas no significant difference was observed between this drug and Z. multiflora at dose of 48 mg/kg. These data explain the increased rate of yeast clearance and reduced dissemination to the viscera of Z. multiflora treated mice.
